Using Combination Locks
Combination locks have more uses than simply to lock briefcases and lockers: they are also used in safes. They are amongst the oldest ‘sophisticated’ lock systems in use, with combinations running into the millions, thereby making the task of finding the right combination almost an impossibility.
In case you’re not fully aware of the system that is involved, a combination lock comprises a rotating dial that usually has three cams, though there can also be more. These cams, or discs, are inscribed with numbers that relate to the locking mechanism. When the correct numbers are rotated to a fixed position in the correct order, then the lock is released and the latch is opened.
While combination locks are rarely used for home or office door security, they are used by individuals for locking small cabinets, bags and luggage, and briefcases. There are two main kinds of combination lock – the multiple-dial lock and the single dial lock – both of which have the advantages and disadvantages.
